Happy 10th Iron Sommelier!

By: Leticia Luna

The wine flowed freely at The Periwinkle Foundation’s annual wine competition and fundraiser at the Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Iron Sommelier presented by AUTOSOL has been dubbed by many attendees, including prominent food and wine reporters, as “Houston’s best wine event of the year.” Each year, Elmore PR helps Periwinkle raise some buzz before the event, coordinate media attendance and secure coverage. With the evolution of the event, our team has made a strong push to bring more media covering the food and wine industry and doubled the number of media attendees this year alone representing Edible Houston, Houston Chronicle, Texas Wine Lover and more.

This year’s competitors, most notably the Pappas, Caracol and Helen Greek Food and Wine teams, brought more than delicious wines to their tables—adorning them with delectable food pairings to offer guests as they enjoyed hand selected wines. If the light bites weren’t enough, Periwinkle supporters Hopdoddy Burger Bar and the Houstonian Hotel, Club and Spa provided plenty of delicious options for guests to enjoy. After all was tasted and done, Caracol’s Andres Blanco, a first-time competitor at the event, took home the title of Iron Sommelier 2017 and the People’s Choice Award with his “Wines of Mexico” theme. A record $290,000 were raised for Periwinkle’s camps, arts and survivor programs including Camp Periwinkle, Camp YOLO, Making A Mark and more. Check out the full list of awards here.

Iron Sommelier has grown from a small gathering at a private home to one of the most anticipated wine events of the year with more than 600 attendees. Our team has worked with Periwinkle on this event since 2012. We are proud to see how much it has grown, and the visibility it has raised for the organization’s amazing programs for children, teens, and families touched by pediatric cancer.
