To support HGO’s world premiere of A Voice Within by the company’s composer-in-residence, Joel Thompson, Elmore implemented a targeted media relations strategy designed to elevate the production within local, hyper-local, and Black-owned publications. Given the work’s deep roots in Houston’s Third Ward and its focus on the lived experiences of Black Houstonians, our publicity approach prioritized culturally relevant storytelling and community-centered platforms.
The goal was to ensure cultural alignment in coverage to position A Voice Within not just as a classical music premiere, but as a Juneteenth-adjacent cultural event grounded in Black history and community memory as it was part of Emancipation Park’s weeklong Juneteenth celebration.
Our outreach strategy included:
- Proactive pitching to Black-owned and Black-focused publications and broadcast outlets in Houston.
- Highlighting the leadership and authorship of composer Joel Thompson and librettist Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton, both prominent Black artists and their approach to storytelling.
- Leveraging the Juneteenth performance date to align coverage with broader editorial calendars focused on Black history, culture, and civic celebration.
This targeted approach reframed A Voice Within as a cultural moment for Houston — not solely an HGO event — resulting in more meaningful placement within community-trusted outlets and strengthening relationships with Black media stakeholders for future coverage.
