Should your organization be on TikTok? What about Threads, Instagram or LinkedIn? It is easy to feel pressure to establish a presence on all of them. But an effective social media strategy isn’t about being everywhere. It’s about being where you’ll make an impact. Success depends less on the size of your following alone and more on the value and relevance of what you share.

Before adding another channel to your social media mix, take a step back and evaluate whether it’s the right fit.

Start with your audience.

Who are you trying to reach, and where do they go for information? Your social media strategy should reflect the habits and preferences of your target audience, not simply the popularity of a platform. Consider where your stakeholders are most active and which channels offer the best opportunities to connect with them.

Define your objectives.

What do you want your social media presence to accomplish? Whether your goals are to increase awareness, encourage engagement, recruit employees or volunteers, or to support fundraising efforts, each channel should serve a strategic purpose. Joining a platform without a clear objective can lead to content that feels forced or inauthentic, potentially weakening your connection with stakeholders.

Audit your existing channels.

Being on more platforms doesn’t necessarily mean more impact. Review your current channels to assess activity, audience growth, engagement and performance against your objectives. Are you reaching the right people on those platforms, and are you achieving meaningful results? If not, it might be time to pivot away from the channel.

Tailor content to each platform.

Each social media channel has its own audience expectations, content formats and strengths. Rather than copying and pasting the same post across every platform, tailor your content to fit the channel and the people who use it.

LinkedIn audiences tend to respond best to industry insights and thought leadership. Instagram favors compelling visuals through Reels and Stories, while TikTok often rewards timely, personality-driven videos. Creating content that feels native to each platform can help your organization connect more authentically with its audience and make a greater impact.

A focused presence on fewer channels can be more effective than a scattered approach across many.

Evaluate your capacity.

Each social channel requires a strategy of its own. Before expanding your presence, consider whether your team has the capacity, time and creative resources to develop content that takes advantage of each channel’s unique opportunities. If your team struggles to create meaningful platform-specific content or maintain a consistent presence, it may be time to bring on a partner to assist with your social strategy and content development.
